Cartoonist Zapiro had social networks abuzz with his latest cartoon, which depicts President Jacob Zuma as a large phallus.
Most Twitter users felt that the cartoon, published today, was distasteful and undermined Jonathan Shapiro’s often accurate social commentary.
@ina_gouws tweeted: “Listen. It’s true that I don’t like our president very much. But he is the president & deserves some respect for that. Zapiro went too far”.
Another user @Barry McCallum tweeted “I’m not offended by the #zapiro cartoon. I just didn’t think it was up to his usual clever standards.”
@NomsaRadebe tweeted “Wow @zapiro’s cartoon. What bravery! Yoh!”
@phillipdewet tweeted: “Sounds like the ANC finally gets the Streisand Effect. Mantashe says it won’t sue on #Zapiro, so giving attention to “spoilt children”.
Mail & Guardian editor Nic Dawes defended the publication’s decision to publish the cartoon.
“Zapiro has a wide degree of latitude to express himself and I don’t think he has overstepped the mark,” he told News24.
The ANC as well as its Women’s League condemned the cartoon in strong terms. “We find it shocking that after the harsh experiences that South Africa, the president and his family has experienced a few weeks ago, that Zapiro and the M&G finds it appropriate to continue with insults and hurt the president,” the ANC said.
