foreign minister, a leading mediator for West Africa’s ECOWAS bloc, said.

“We have just received the formal letter of resignation from President Amadou Toumani Toure,” Djibril Bassole said on Sunday.

The resignation paves the way for the soldiers who ousted Toure to stand aside as pledged in a deal that would also see the two-week-old military junta stepping down in return for the end of trade and diplomatic sanctions.

“We have learned that the ousted president, Amadou Toumani Toure, has officially resigned. This should now pave the way for the formation of an interim government,” ” Al Jazeera’s Hashem Ahelbarra reported from the capital Bamako on Sunday.

He said speculation about the make-up of the next Mali government has already begun.

“We understand from sources here that the military junta will get key political ministries in the [interim] government, most likely the ministry of defence.”
